Dear Spartan Alumni,
Well, it happen again…another year went ‘zipping’ by. It’s summer now. For those who are too old to remember their high school days, summer use to mean “a 3-month vacation from life.” Most of us are working stiffs now and Summer only means ‘hotter’ working days than the rest of the year. As you know, my summer is busy ‘slave driving’ a new crop of runners into submission. The torture is held at the same place (the Cove) and at the same dreadful time (5:30A.M.) as always. If you find yourself waking up at the ‘insanely early’ time of 5:30 while getting the sudden urge to ‘burn some calories’, then put on your running shoes and stop by.
July 15 – August 2: Mon. thru. Fri. @ 5:30 A.M. @ Malaga Cove Plaza August 5 – Sept 6: Mon. thru. Fri. @ 7:00 A.M. @ Malaga Cove Plaza
Here’s are 2001 Cross Country season wrap up:
· A new coach!! After Coach Harris retired, we got a new XC coach…Coach Rochelle Terry. She’s an English teacher/coach and was great for us last year. She actually fundraised for us and bought some new uniforms for the kids….gasp!! · Our boy’s varsity team was very young this year. After graduating 4 seniors and losing 2 returners, our team was made up 2 seniors, 3 juniors, and 4 sophomores. The last race of the year, our top 5 runners were 4 sophomores and 1 freshmen…incredibly the guys managed to get 4th in league. Sophomore Damon Ferrara (4:35 in the mile) finished 3rd in league, while breaking virtually all grade-level records. · The girls graduated 4 seniors from the previous year, and unfortunately we didn’t pick up any new girls to break into our top 5 scoring positions. So the girls slipped down to 4th place behind Redondo. The girls were lead by junior Katie Farish (5:17 in the mile) who finished 5th in the league.
Other news:
· Coach Harris retired last year. But South called him back one week before the start of the new school year to be the temporary Athletic Director. You probably recall how much Coach Harris would stress out about XC and Track. Well just imagine Coach Harris’ stress level when he was in charge of all the sports at South…getting buses ready, getting officials, dealing with parents, dealing with the paperwork, etc. His blood pressure went through the roof this year. Recently he got an offer from El Camino Football to help out coaching….decision still pending. · We actually won some Track meets this year!! 6 meets to be exact…which is a lot better than 1 meet from last year. I’d go through the highlights, but who really cares about a bunch of hurdlers, shot putters, and triple jumpers. We did ‘good’ and that’s all you need to know.
Okay, the alumni news. A brief warning, I have no idea if this stuff is true or not. Most of this stuff is just rumors that I pick up from other people. And even the news that I get first hand, I tend to forget in about 10 minutes. But who cares if it’s true or not right?
Welcome to the alumni club (Class of 2002) Lauren Glick (’02)…going to El Camino, might play soccer and run track. I should warn Coach Dean Lofgren about her now… ‘a bit on the goofy-side.’ Excitra Gott (’02)…going to El Camino…not going to run. Brian Leduff (’02)…going to San Diego (UC, Cal State…can’t remember) Keely Sweeny (’02)…going to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Most notable for graduating a crop of 80’s runners…Chris ‘Hirshman’ Hamilton, Sean ‘Bonerady’ Sheil, Jon ‘Pee-Wee’ Federoff, and Brian ‘Ah-so’ Tokuda. Have fun at gum-wall. Michelle Turman (’02)…going to El Camino. Interesting side note…dating the younger brother (Daniel) of former SHS alumni runner Joe Lopez. We’re all connected somehow. Jason Yamanishi (’02)…going to El Camino. Might help out with the hurdle team next year.
Other Alumni News: Kurt Allendorf (’95)…Fireman living in Lone Pine (out in the Mojave Desert) during the summer. Ski lift operator at June Lake (by Mammoth Mts.) during the winter. Much bigger than his high school days. Jenny Atkinson (’98)…just graduated from LMU. Got a job offer making $40,000 a year (not bad for a 22-year old)…but she rejected it saying ‘Glendale is too far away.’ She’ll soon regret that one. Mike Billie (’00)…made the A.P. list (All Pro) at San Luis Obispo, and has been dropped from the Engineering Dept. Jonathan Cook (’01)…Saw Jon (CSULB) working at the new fancy ice cream shop owned by SHS alumni Dwight ‘the only Asian guy, Rena Kono thought was cute’ Oh (’89) and Johnny ‘million dollar man’ Morton (’89) Kelly ‘time-girl’ Connors (’97)…still the best timer assistant I’ve ever had. Kelly is getting (or is already) married to Mike ‘pole vaulter’ Signorelli (’94.) Kelly, you still owe me a beer for giving you an ‘A’ without ever showing up to class. Aimee Duncan (’98)…taught at South High as an English teacher. She actually was teaching little sister Lindsay Duncan’s friends…that’s got to be weird. Jon Federoff (’87)…heard through the grapevine, that Jon was spotted in the maternity ward with kid number #2. Marcus Ferrara (’93)…stationed in Korea McCaul Flack (’01)… ‘red-shirt’ her first year of track at UC Davis…not allowed to run XC. Don’t really understand that coaching mentality. Holly Harris (’96)…coaching two soccer teams, working graveyard shifts at a hospital. Brendan James (’97)…lead singer in a local band…couldn’t tell you the name of the band. But “Hurdle Crew’ would be a cool name. Don’t bother calling the band ‘Sh#t Wrapped In Tin Foil’…the name is taken already. Krista Kalmar (’98)…saw Krista at the Wherehouse. I can’t remember what she told me…but I think she’s doing ‘something random’ working in a warehouse counting furniture (yea, something like that.) Karen Lofstrom (’00)…ran for El Camino. Got drunk in Mexico, ‘puked’ so hard that she blew out some blood vessels in her eye. For weeks, her eye was ‘bloodshot’…now that’s a good ‘drinking story.’ David Louvet (’99)…huge, way huge, all out of proportioned now. Says that he never used steroids…yea, right? Was/Is dating an older woman…still likes himself way too much. Ricky Leung (‘97)…going to Cal State Fullerton, after getting kick-out of Santa Barbara. Interesting story about Ricky: inbetween schools, he helped out coaching soccer and track at South. Coach Leung actually cut Katie Farish (my current MVP in Track and Cross Country) from the Frosh/Soph. soccer team. It was okay though, Katie was later picked up by the varsity coach (and is now among the top 3 athletes at our school.) Way to spot talent Ricky. Stacey McDaniels (’90)…working for Hitachi Automotives. Her two kids are now 8 and 6 years old…aye caramba!! Christina Moore (’97)…saw Christina at the Turkey Trot. She wanted a correction from a previous alumni letter: not an accountant, but a financial analysis (I think…whatever, some suit and tie job.) Chris Nelson (’00)…transferring from El Camino to UCLA on some 100% regional scholarship. Also, he got way buffer. Proof that some people actually ‘peak’ after high school. Adam Neesby (’01)…Wrestled well at Golden West College. Transferred to a flight school in Arizona. Wants to do missionary work while flying into remote locations. Brian Neesby (’01)…ran XC for El Camino. They found out that he has bad-running form and has been injured since. ASB president at El Camino. Went on a missionary trip to some random place in Russia. Jonathan Pyles (’96)…working on his PHD at A.P (Azuza Pacific.) Jennifer Scarlett (’92)…works for Alloy as a salesperson. Ryan Toma (’00)…going to some liberal arts college in Philadelphia. Doing cricket and crew. Jeff Turman (’99)…going to CSUDH working on a teaching credential. Going to help me out with coaching XC this year. Hope he doesn’t call the new freshmen ‘pusses’ before their first race. Andrea Vanderpluym (’89)…jobless, working on two books, soon to be married. And so ends ‘slimers’ days of flirting with guys. Jim Wei (‘98)…lives out in Boston, I think. In any rate, he’s living out East ‘freezing’ his butt off.
Well, that’s all I can remember. Sorry if you actually did ‘something significant’ this past year and weren’t mentioned. Let me know what’s up or scan me a picture. I’m slowly catching up with new technology…I got an E-mail address (btokuda@go2netmail.com)…pretty soon I can throw away this Commodore 64 (it’s an 80’s joke.) E-mail me something juicy to share with the rest of the alumni family. Realistically I don’t expect to see any of you alumni at 5:30 in the morning, so just take care of yourself. And Remember:
“ Once a runner, always a runner.” “The older I get, the faster I was.”

South High School Cross Country
Dear Spartan Alumni,
Well, it happen again…another year went ‘zipping’ by. It’s summer now. That’s just a reminder to all of you working stiffs, who work all year long and have long forgotten that ‘summer’ means a 3-month vacation for the high school kids. God, wasn’t life was a lot easier in high school??…when your biggest concern was…nothing. But in any rate, here’s the South High training schedule for the summer. For those who are not living in a different state or time zone, come by the Cove and run with us sometime. And yup, the time is 5:30 in the morning….ouch!!
July 16 – August 10: Mon. thru. Fri. @ 5:30 A.M. @ Malaga Cove Plaza August 13 – August 31: Mon. thru. Fri. @ 7:00 A.M. @ Malaga Cove Plaza
Here’s are 2000 Cross Country season wrap up:
· The boy’s varsity finally beat Peninsula H.S. for the first time ever!!…of course, Coach Joe Kelly didn’t coach the guys this year for the first time (his girl’s were State Champions.) · Senior Brian Neesby was Bay League Champion…the first Bay League Champion since Charlie Davis (in 1982.) Senior Matt Ferrara was 2nd in the league, and senior Bobby Jones was 9th in the league. The guys took third overall. · The girls were led by Senior McCaul Flack (5:18 miler) and Sophomore Katie Farish (5:20 miler.) They finished second in the league (behind Peninsula), despite having no one finish in the top 10. They set new team records on the Mt. SAC course and Bell-Jeff course…they might be the best South team that we’ve seen (of course, some of you girls might want to dispute that.)
Now the big news at South:
· Coach Dick Harris retires!! Yes, look out bars, the man is loose. Go ahead and put your investment money into Anheuser-Busch stock. Congratulate the man when you see him at Hollywood Park. · Mr. & Mrs. Coach are retiring!! That’s Coach Rich Ruffell and Mrs. Sherry Ruffell to you guys who weren’t around in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Look out Big Bear, cause now your getting a permanent resident. · Coach Roger Bryant retires!! Our Athletic Director and sporadic Cross Country coach is leaving the Spartan family. He basically put South Soccer on the map.
With all the retirement, you know what that means. Coach Tokuda is the only one left on campus to keep the Cross Country and Track program afloat…aye caramba. They tell me there might be a new female coach who could be around to help me out. Gosh, I hope we have the same magic and chemistry that Coach Loren Griffing and Coach Alison Hartmann had back in 1993. “Ain’t that right Griffing…Jeffery give it to her good.”
And then there’s the alumni news. And like always, I have no idea if this stuff is true or not. I just hear stories about people, and I try to remember it 6 months later when I write this letter. I should warn you, my memory is going bad…like my hearing…am I the only one whose losing their hearing? (I think I went to many U2 concerts in the 80’s.)
Welcome to the alumni club (Class of 2001) Jonathan Cook (’01)…Cal State Long Beach. Heidi Esh (’01)…going to be a “Banana Slug’…I think. Matt Ferrara (’01)…going to West Point. Another military man in the family. McCaul Flack (’01)…going to UC Davis…going to run Track up there. Bobby Jones (’01)…going to UCSD. Michelle LeQuire (’01)…going to UC Santa Barbara. Good luck…I knew an alumni (named Ricky Leung) who went there, partied hard, and got kicked out.) Adam Neesby (’01)…going to Golden West to Wrestle. Brian Neesby (’01)…going to El Camino to run for Dean Lofgren. He’s going to take a ‘beating’ from his old coach at the E.C.C. Alumi Race. “I made you, and I can break you.” Laurel Plummer (’01)…going to UC Santa Barbara. Good luck…I knew an alumni (named Joe Markxs) who went there, got stoned, and was never seen again since 1992) Jonathan Zimmerman (’01)…going to University of Nebraska. Doing something with weather and stage…I think.
Other Alumni News: Jim August (’00)…ran Track and peaked at 4:08 in the 1500m. Adam Bennett (‘93)…has his own business as a Sports Masseuse. Married, and working as with something very ‘environmental-like.’ Jennifer Brownlie (‘96)…teacher up north and likes it…scary. Paul Christenson (’89)…bought a new house in San Diego. Being an engineer, he made the design of his house…pretty scary what an education can do. Erin Connors (‘98)…served me beer once at Redondo Beach Brewing Company…that’s my girl. And let this be a reminder to everybody that I’ve coached…I’m not asking for much from you just ‘a beer’ and a ‘tartan track.’ Rahal Ehsan (’00)…don’t really know what he’s doing, but saw him once and he claims to ‘be in love’ …. “Coach, I’m going to marry this girl.” …thought that was pretty funny. Marcus Ferrara (‘93)…. Stationed in Hawaii serving our country. Ryan Hashi (’96)…going to Cal State Fullerton to become a ‘physicist.’ Krista Kalmar (‘98)… saw Krista on the Strand on the 4th of July…partying like a ‘Viking.’ Got kicked out of El Camino (is that possible.) But always resilient, she wrote a letter to get reinstated. Chris and Jon Kerber (’97 & ’00)…one brother went into the military and lost weight. One brother went to college and gain weight (along with a few ring piercing.) Karen Lofstrom (’00)…finished up her first year running XC for El Camino…injured for Track. Ran a 25+ minute Village Runner 5K…ouch…still trying to get in shape. Tim McLellan (’86)…coming back to South High as our new Vice Principal. He better let us Spartan teachers wear shorts and running shoes in the classroom. Curt Miller (’87)…living in Illinois…married with 3 kids (Jacie, Abra, and Noah)…has a Computer Engineering degree and working for Rational Software. Christina Moore (’97)… working for an accounting firm doing audits…very busy. Sawako Nakamura (‘93)… squeezed out a baby girl named Sierra. Starting to run again. Hair is no longer green. Jenny Park (‘96)…saw Jenny at a Travis concert with red streaks in her hair. Living out in Hollywood, just graduated from UCLA, looking for a job. Virgil Pulmano (‘94)… owns a business over the Internet, showing sporting events over the net. Also working in as a chemical engineer in El Segundo…doing something very random with Hydrogen Sulfate. Rod “Coma-Boy” Taylor (’90)…has a baby boy named Chad. Chad should be doing something stupid in a few years, and making a few quick trips to jail. ‘Like father, like son’…right dad. Jeff Turman (’99)…finished his second season running at El Camino. No doubt, the highlight of his career was coming within a few seconds of Coach Tokuda at the ECC Alumni race. Grant Walkup (’88)…moved to Boston at the beginning of the year. Got a job doing some random research for some drug company. And has a new baby girl named Laura Elizabeth “future scientist” Walkup.
Well, that’s it. Sorry if you actually did ‘something ‘this past year and weren’t mentioned…mail me the news at the South High address. I don’t expect to see any of you alumni at 5:30 in the morning, so just take care of yourself. And Remember:
“ Once a runner, always a runner.” “The older I get, the faster I was.”

Dear Spartan Alumni,
Well gang, another year went by…and it’s time to ‘piece’ together another alumni letter. These years ‘fly by’ way too fast. In fact, last year I totally forgot typing up a letter…but, it probably doesn’t matter much (nothing much changes around here.) Below is my ‘personal hell’…the schedule and times of our Cross Country Summer training.
July 10 – August 4: Monday thru Friday @ 5:30 A.M. @ Malaga Cove Plaza August 7 – September 8: Monday thru. Friday @ 7:00 A.M. @ Malaga Cove Plaza
Yup, the kids voted on 5:30 in the morning to train!! So if for some reason you’re in town and having a hard time sleeping, then just wake-up and ‘dust off’ your old running shoes and swing by the Cove. Let these youngsters know that you can still run a 4:30 mile (right Taylor?)
1999 & 2000 Cross Country Season: n In ’99, the boy’s varsity team finally beat Mira Costa by 1 point at the dual meet…but unfortunately lost to them at league finals. The team was lead by All-League runners Jeff Turman and Jon Lopez. n In 2000, the next year the guys officially beat Costa at both the dual meet and league finals. But Peninsula was there to take first place…so we had to settle for second. The guys were lead by All-League runners Matt Ferrara and Brian Neesby. n In ’99, the girl’s team had zero all-league runners…but we managed to take second place in the league behind Peninsula. In track, McCaul Flack broke the school record in the 800m with a 2:16.
As for any Alumni news. Well, I rarely see any of the old-timers. Plus when I do and they tell me what they’re doing, I completely forget…Coach Harris is rubbing off on me. Who knows whether any of this information is true? Who cares?…a good rumor is always interesting.
Welcome to the club (Class of 2000) Jim August (’00)…going to El Camino to run with Coach Loftgren. Remember Jim, don’t think that you’re just a track runner. Rahal Ehsan (’00)…going to UC Riverside to ‘choke’ on smog. I’ve coached him for four years, and I still have no idea how to spell his name. Kevin Connors & Rick Merrill (’00)…going to UC Berekley together…trouble! Oliver Inauen (’00)…going to Cal Poly Pomona…may continue running, get use to the heat and the Mt. SAC hills. Zipper Lomas (’00)…going to U.C.L.A….just ran a 18:54 at Village Runner 5K. Karen Lofstrom (’00)…going to El Camino and will continue running Cross Country. Karen will continue the line (after Jenny Atkinson) of great ‘complainers/bitchers’ that we are passing to El Camino. Jonathan Lopez (’00)…going to be ‘all he can be’…Army bound. Good luck soldier. You may thank me later for getting you in running shape. Daniel Louvet & Steven Louvet (’00)…going to U.C.L.A…plan to make good money in a few years to buy Coach Tokuda a tartan track. Eddie Mejia (’00)…going to U.S.C. We have former alumni from USC, who are still trying to pay off the college tuition 10 years after the fact. Chris Nelson (’00)…captain of the ‘J.V. for Life’ team is going to El Camino. Maybe Coach Loftgren can convince him to ‘scrap’ up his knees again in the hurdles. Ramachandran, Pradeep (’00)…going to follow the footsteps of his sister and heading to UC Riverside.
Since I didn’t make a letter last year…welcome to the club (Class of 1999) Bryanna Gonzales (’99)…went to El Camino and played soccer for the team. Lindsay Glick (’99)…went to Cal State Fullerton and played soccer there. David Louvet (’99)…went to UC Santa Barbara to ‘test’ his ego there. Jeff Turman (’99)…ran for El Camino last year. Continues to ‘talk smack’ that he’s going to beat Coach Tokuda. I guess if you’re going to dream, then ‘dream big.’
Kurt Allendorf (1995)…works as a forest fireman down in San Diego. “Fire-boy” Krista Barnes (1996)…given a second chance on life. Her ordeal in Peru is over and she can be seen cruising on the strand. See article Jennifer Brownlie (1996)…recently graduated and is thinking of becoming a teacher. Get use to being poor. John Dehart (1990)… Editor Chief of College Newspaper and works for Fox Sports News. Jon French (1988)…recently married. I see him mowing the lawn every once in awhile…middle age man. Simone Ferrara (1995)…playing pro soccer for the New Zealand National soccer team. Daniel Flynn (1995) -- graduated from CSULB with a Political Science Degree…now the real key is what do you do with this degree? Eric Iwasaki (1990)…Computer Artist/Animator for PlayStation. Scott Ladner (1988)…saw Scooter at the 10 year reunion. Had been married for a year and was expecting their first kid. Ricky Leung (1997)…helped the coaches with Cross Country, soccer, and Track last year. Brad Renault (1988)…Married and has one kid...owes some ‘used car dealership’ I think. Allison Takao (1993)…went back to school for a master in education. Rod Taylor (1990)…on Oct. 13, 1998 Rod fell off a roof and landed on his head. He went into a coma for 8 days and was on a breathing respirator. He woke up a little shaken (two broken wrist, blurring vision, a broken rib, a tube in his throat (for breathing), a tube coming out of his stomach (for eating while in a coma), and a weak right leg. He’s still obnoxious as ever....but he had to pay the ultimate price, he’s not allowed to drink beer for 18 months. Apparently the fall didn’t effect his balls cause I’ve heard he’s got a baby boy. Andrea Vanderpluym (1989)…an editor for a web site that deals primarily with girly stuff. Arika Welch (1995)…going to El Camino working in the nursing program.
Well that’s about all I can remember this year. If you’ve got a new address or some news to spread, then get a hold of me through the South High address . And remember, “once a runner, always a runner.” See ya. Coach Brian Tokuda

Dear Spartan Alumni,
“No, not another letter from Coach Tokuda.” Yes and we all know what that means....we’re all another year older (and we ain’t getting any prettier.) In fact, some of us are ‘hurtin’ on the ‘beauty scale’ right now. The hair-line on some of us guys is ‘retreating’ fast...and taking ‘cover’ within the rolls of fat on our waist-line. But this is not a letter for ‘beatings’ ...this letter is to let you know that the new Cross Country team will be training over summer. The schedule is ‘sick’ but here it is:
July 13 - August 7: Monday thru Friday @ 6:00 A.M. @ Malaga Cove Plaza August 10 - Sept 9: Monday thru Friday @ 7:00 A.M. @ Malaga Cove Plaza
The time is painfully early...but you must remember that the kids must get their run in before the dreadful “summer school.” If something ‘possess’ you to put on the running shoes, then swing by and ‘shoot the sh#t’ with us at the Cove.
The 1997 Cross Country Season: -- Of the 5 levels, we were League Champions in 3 divisions and 2nd in the other two levels. -- Girls Varsity went undefeated in league and won the League Championship with 6 new faces on the team. The girls were led by Jenny Atkinson, Amie Huff, and Freshmen Michelle Le Quire. We had 3 All-League runners; Senior Jenny Atkinson (4th) Senior Adriana Contreras (8th), and Sophomore Jennifer Clark (5th) The girls J.V. won league for the 4th straight year. -- Boys Varsity (with more under-classmen than upper-classmen) went 5-1 and were second in the league. The boys were lead by Jeff Turman, Zipper Lomas, and Jonathon Lopez. We had 2 All-League runners; Junior Jeff Turman (5th) and Sophomore Zipper Lomas (10th) The guys are returning the top 10 runners for next year. -- Next year, we are moving into the league with the top 8 local schools. Victories will be less frequent, but much more rewarding.
Yeah...whatever? That’s all fine and dandy, but what about the alumni. Well, it’s almost impossible for me to get the latest scoop on people. Some of you are ‘fading away.’ The rumors that I’m getting are either by the most random encounters or through the grapevine. In any rate, some of you could careless how accurate the information is..you just want a good rumor.
Welcome to the club (Class of 1998) Hakam Al-Samarrai (98) -- going to U.C.L.A....wants to be a dentist or an engineer (in either case, his life is over for the next 8 years....call him, “late-night library” boy) Jenny Atkinson (98) -- going to El Camino. Plans to run for Coach Loftgren...hopefully she can stay healthly for one season. Erin Connors (98) -- going to Wake Forest University (that’s across the globe in North Caralina)... ...majoring in Political Science. Adriana Contreras (98) -- going to El Camino. Plans to run for Coach Loftgren...another one, who is extremely injured prone. Lesa Glick (98) -- going to Stevens Institute of Technology...what?...yah, that’s some random college in “butt-cold” New Jersey. Majoring in Electrical Engineering ($$) Amie Huff (98) -- going to U.C.L.A....undeclared major (‘under’ Life Science...I don’t quite understand how you can be ‘undeclared’ and yet have a ‘major’) Krista Kalmar (98) -- going to El Camino. Plans to avoid Cross Country and track just like her brother. Kristen Kiley (98) -- going to Cal State San Diego...yikes, a lot of alcohol down there. Alycia Lewis (98) -- going to U.C.S.B....joining up with some former SHS runners in Santa Barbara (go easy on your liver.) Gina Ricci (98) -- going to U.C. Berkeley Tom Uh (98) -- going to El Camino. No running plans. Jim Wei (98) -- going to Johnson and Wales University...some very random college in Rhode Island. Plans to go east and freeze his butt off. Jim, this is an ‘island’ very very close to Greenland and Iceland...give your short pants to the salvation army, cause you’re never going to use them again.
And the rest of us:

He had no insurance...(“when sh#t happens, wipe your ass”)...going under that basic theory, he started up a new bike store by the beach. Holly Harris (1996) -- tore it up during track. She became an All American (for Macalester) in the 400m with a P.R. of 56.36 (a school record.) To a U.C.L.A. student...Mark Sakaguchi Kristen Lockyear (1991) -- Living in Arizona with 2 kids. Joanna Lockyear (1992) -- Just graduated from F.I.D.M...a fashion & design school. Jonathon Pyles (1996) -- Finished up running for Coach Lofgren and plans to continue running at Azusa Pacific College. Alison Takao (1993) --graduated with a Geology degree at UCSB. Heard she started teaching elementary school in Northridge. Martin Turner (1986) -- Fit...ran a 34 minute-ish at Super Sunday 10K. Erik Vranesh (1991) -- sprint coach at Peninsula High. Strange...coming from a guy who, according to Coach Harris, never started a race in 4 years. Grant Walkup (1988) -- call him Doctor Walkup...just finished up his P.H.D. at Pasadena. Plans to move down to San Diego with the wife, and do something very ‘scientific’ Tim Zichur (1994) -- bumped into him at a bar where he was working as a bouncer...can’t go into anymore details without incriminating myself.
These next people I have no idea what their doing...but, I ‘spotted’ them running..so that’s a good thing: Ariana Benardo (96), Jennifer Brownlie (96), and James McLory (87). Well that’s it. As you know, I’m always paranoid if these letters are ever getting to some of you. So if you have a change of address or a good story, then let me know. See ya.

Dear Spartan Alumni,
Well it happen again...another year ‘zipped’ by. How fast are the years flying by? Well, I’m just now starting to adjust to the 90’s and this decade is almost over....right now I’m coaching kids from the Class of 2001...2001???...isn’t that the futuristic movie about talking computers, advanced monkeys, and strange ‘black lego pieces.’ Well in any rate... “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” Life must go on. And so must the Summer Cross Country Workouts. This year’s gang did it again...they want to run at 6 in the morning!!...what do these kids have against sleeping?!? The schedule is as follow:
July 16 - August 8: Monday thru Friday @ 6:00 A.M. @ Malaga Cove Plaza August 11 - Sept 5: Monday thru Friday @ 7:00 A.M. @ Malaga Cove Plaza
It’s definitely early and your definitely out of shape...but if you ever get that ‘urge’, then come on by some random day and see the gang. Or get on a bike and get ‘in these youngsters ears.’
The 1996 Cross Country Season: -- Girls Varsity had a very bumpy season. Injuries, inexperience and immaturity eventually caught up with the girls as they faulter at league finals and at C.I.F. We had 3 All-League Runners (Atkinson, Gonzales, and Glick, Li.) but we had to settle for a second place finish. The Junior Varsity girls repeated as League champions. -- The boy’s team had their strongest and most consistent season since 1992. Senior Brent Kalmar had a strong year leading us to a 5-1 season. The guys were outmatched by Costa, but took a respectable second place in league. We had 3 All-League Runners (Iki, Turman, and Yi.) -- We finally had a breakthrough with a strong group of Freshmen boys. We potentially have 7 kids who could make varsity their sophomore year. The future looks bright for the guys in the years to come.
Okay, now for the Fat Hairy Alumni. Well, it’s hard to gather information/rumors about the alumni...some people have basically ‘fallen off the face of the earth.’ Some of this info. is coming in as second hand news. In any rate, here are the rumor updates for this year.
Welcome to the club (Class of 1997):
Wataru Asano (1997) -- going to L.M.U. An international business major Ryan Hashi (1997) -- going to Cornell as a Physics major...promise to continue running. Brendan James (1997) -- going to El Camino. Plans to help out coaching X-C and track...good idea. Brent Kalmar (1997) -- heading to El Camino (maybe). Plans to run for Coach Loftgren (maybe) Woojae “Prom King” Kim (1997) -- going to U.C.L.A...as a biology major. Ricky Leung (1997) -- going to U.C.S.B. as a social science major....plans to run for the team also. Going to spend the summer helping the ‘aging’ Tokuda coach ...good idea, Rick. But it’s not likely you’ll get collegiate fitness with the current gang. Sean Yi (1997) -- Going to the Navy... “to be all he can be.”
And the rest of us:
Kurt Allendorf (1995) -- No longer ‘Army boy.’ Taking things easier at El Camino. Krista Barnes (1996) -- Not good news. Ariana Benardo (1996) -- Had a great season as a softball player somewhere in the Mississippi bayou. Adam Bennett (1993) -- Still at Whitter...looks very fit and still competes in triatholon. Jennifer Brownlie (1996) -- Had to ‘red shirt’ her first year at U.C. Davis because of back-problems...hopefully it’s not too serious. Alexia Brody (1987) -- Alexia gave birth to a 6 lb baby boy on Valentine’s Day; Zak Mitchell. Mary Lou Cordaro (1996) -- Mary Lou recently gave birth to a 8.5 lb baby boy; Jimmy. She left Chico to take care of her newborn. Chris Covely (1993) -- Having a blast down in San Diego...last I heard, dating a swimmer. Jon Federoff (1987) -- a Graphic Designer married in L.A. Expecting a baby the last time I saw Jon...don’t know the details on the newborn. Julie Fulkerson (1987) -- Finished up her master degree in Counseling. Has to spend 3000 hours counseling Elementary and Junior high kids. Loren Griffing (1988) -- Open up his own bike business in Redondo Bch. Sells equipment over the internet. Organizes bike expos. Very busy. Holly Harris (1996) -- In ‘butt-cold’ Minnesota, Holly had an excellent soccer season, along with a more impressive track season where she set school records. Erin Ivers (1990) -- Living in Puerto Rico with some random guy...whatever. Curt Miller (1987) -- Living in Arkansas...married with a baby girl named Jacie. Stacy McDaniel (1990) -- Stacy gave birth to her second baby girl named Sierra. Sawako Nakamura (1993) -- Came back from Colorado...runs like a warrior...thinking of moving on to Cal State L.A. Jon Neumann (1986) -- The big hockey fanatic quit his accounting job in P.V...now works with some random Real Estate guy. Rod Taylor (1990) -- Owns a roofing business...Bought a house in Torrance...Got married in May on a small boat. Who would have guessed?...wasn’t this the same guy that wore a gorilla mask and ‘streaked’ a campground? Brian Tokuda (1988) -- Finished the first year of teaching at South...very interesting experience. Martin Turner (1986) -- Fitness guru...trains for and runs marathons. Andrea Vanderpluym (1989) -- Still a writer...now a writer for a teen magazine. Grant Walkup (1988) -- Made some flourescent goo to bind medals together...something like that. He got a patent on this product and went around the state trying to sell it. Arika Welch (1995) -- “Kind of” ran for El Camino. Now 3 months pregnant. Nadine Newell (1989) -- Someone said that she should be mention in the alumni letter. If you don’t know already...about two years ago, Nadine was in Germany as an exchange student. She was riding her bike one night and got hit and killed by a drunk driver.
I don’t mean to end on a down note...but just remember that life is short, be careful out there. Anyways, please let me now if you’ve got a new address or any good stories to tell. One last note; I talked to the West High Coach (Rene Lemieux W.H.S ‘87) and he wants to put on an alumni race...South Vs. West. He wants it in late August or early Sept....however, it is very very very tentative. If it looks like a go...then you’ll hear from me again.

Dear Spartan Alumni,
Years ago there was this neat concept called 'summer-vacation.'...but now since most of us alumni are out of school, 'summer-vacation' doesn't exist in our vocabulary. But just imagine, if you will, that you're still in high school...it's now summertime and your only concern is your mom coming into your room and telling you " Wake-up it's 10 o'clock. You can't just spend your summer sleeping." Aahhh, life was so easy back then. If you remember, we did have one responsibility in the summertime...and that was to train for the upcoming Cross Country Season. Back then being in shape for Mt. SAC was the most important thing in our young lives...none of this "paying the bills" garbage. Well if you want to re-live the past or pass on your infinite wisdom to the new Spartan gang, then join me (Coach "who??" Tokuda) train these youngm's. The new gang will be training: July 15 - August 9 : Monday thru. Friday @ 6:00 A.M. @ Malaga Cove Plaza August 12 -September 6: Monday thru. Friday @ 7:00 A.M. @ Malaga Cove Plaza
Yup...6 A.M., that's early, but that's when my kids want to train...naive and dumb. So hopefully, on some random day, we'll see you dust off the old running shoes and show up at the Cove. Maybe you just need to 'shed' a few extra pounds...so jump on a bike and join us. Or just maybe come by, say 'hi', and tell a few stories....whatever, I just need proof that you're not balding with grey hair yet.
The 1995 Cross Country Season: -- For the first time since '90-'91 has the team seen the same two coaches from one year to the next. Coach Harris and Coach Tokuda were the coaches in '95, as they lead a team of over 100 runners!!..can you imagine what 100 X-C runners looks like?? -- 4 Straight League Championship Titles!!! Our girls won another league title with 5 All-League Runners (Atkinson, Ramachandran, Brownlie, Park, and Kalmar) They tied a school record for most consecutive league titles by a girl's team. -- Other girl highlights included : 1st place @ Kenny Staub, 2nd place @ Bell Jeff, 1st place @ Mt. SAC (soph), and Ocean League League Champions in both varsity and J.V. -- Seniors Holly Harris (4-years varsity) and Mary Lou Cordaro (3 years) have been with me since the beginning of this long championship streak...they will be missed. -- The boy's team lost to Culver City at the beginning of the year...ouch!! But, the guys rallied back at league finals to take 2nd place in the league!! (before the race they were in a 3-way tie for 3rd...and they finished in 2nd!!) The guys were lead by Junior Woojae Kim and Senior Jonathon Pyles. The boy's J.V. were league champions for the 2-years straight. -- One track note: Sophomore Jenny Atkinson was 4th in the mile (5:16) and 2nd in the 800m (2:21) @ C.I.F. Finals.
Yeah, yeah, yeah coach...hearing about the youngsters is nice, but what about us, Fat Hairy Alumni? Okay, I will try to update any rumors that I have heard...otherwise look at old alumni letters and see what people might be doing?

Well, that's it for another year. Please let me know if these letters are never getting to you or you have another address. If you have more rumors, random thoughts for the younger runners, or the aching desire to drink a beer...call me. Oh I need your help....if you have any good stories from your high school career, then I would love to hear them. I'm putting together a book/notebook of all of the old South High X-C stories for the younger runners to see....it's nice to see what was going on in the 'old days.' So if you have a story from a race, workout, or whatever, then write it, send it to me, and I'll put it the 'Archives.' If you can't remember a time or finisihing placing, don't worry because I have all the times from the past 12 years. I included one story from the 1992 League Finals in this letter..it's long and you don't have to write a novel like this one. Anyways thanks again.

South High School Cross Country
Dear South High Alumni Letter, 6/26/95
Well another year went by and it's summer again. For many of us, the word 'summer' no longer has any meaning now that we've finished school. But as you know 'summertime' means base training for the X-C high school runners....it's also 'alumni season' for us 'older and wiser' runners who refuse to retire from the sport gracefully. If you're feeling brave, then dust off the running shoes and run with the new gang of South High runners. The new gang will be training: July 17 - August 11: Mon. & Wed. @ 5:00 P.M. at South High Tue. & Thurs. @ 5:00 P.M. at Malaga Cove Fri. @ 3:00 P.M. at South High August 14- Sept. 8: Mon. thru. Fri. @ 7:30 A.M. at Malaga Cove
Come train with us or break out the mountain bike and 'burn off' some quality pounds. Say hello to the coaches and update us on how 'mundane' your life is. Brag to the new gang about how fast you were...they could use a good laugh. We could use some new alumni stories...the kids are sick of hearing Coach Tokuda's '87 Bay League Finals race.
The 1994 Cross Country Season: -- New Coaches!! Coach Dick 'football' Harris joined Coach Brian 'semi-retired' Tokuda to lead the Spartan team. Loren Griffing (92-93) and Allison Hartman (93) hung up their stopwatches to get away from the stress and the unnecessary herptic lips. -- New league (back to the Ocean League.) The league got weaker...with South and Mira Costa as the only two strong schools. -- 3-peat!!! The girls varsity team won yet another league championship. Remember back in 1992 (with Jodi, Sawako, and Christine) when South won it's first championship...well who would have thought that the championship streak would continue into 1995? The team was lead by Simone Ferrara (2 time League champion) and Kalpana Ramachandran (league runner-up.) -- Some of the girl's highlights were as follows: 1st place @ Bell-Jeff (Div. 3), 2nd place at Kenny Staub (Div. 1), ranked 9th in Southern section, 6 All-League runners, Varsity Ocean League Champions, and J.V. Ocean League Champions. -- The boy's team had to overcome the loss of 7 of their varsity runners...2 loss through graduation and 5 loss through coaching decision. To say the least, it was a rebuilding season. The remaining seniors teamed up with a group of talented sophomores to make up the core of the guy's team. The guys took 3rd in league and were led by Soph. Ryan Hashi. The boy's J.V. were League Champions.
That leaves us with the FHA (fat hairy alumni?) I made up a short and modified update of the FHA's lifestyles. I left out many names, either because they 'fell off the face of the earth' or they're still under the rumors from last years alumni letter.
Welcome to the club: Allendorf, Kurt (1995) - Army bound...could use the extra bulk. Ferrara, Simone (1995) - Soccer scholarship to U.C. Irvine. She thinks that she can escape running, but we'll see her name in the running results soon. Flowers, Aaron (1995) - El Camino bound. Flynn, Daniel (1995) - El Camino bound. Welch, Arika (1995) - El Camino bound...going to run for Coach Loftgren as soon as her injury goes away.
Bennet, Adam (1993) - became a Triathelete...tore it up at Lake San Antonio. Covely, Christine (1993) - left CSUF for CSUSD. Joined a sorority and is probably now a lush. Griffing, Loren (1988) - full-time manager at bike store. Drools over a girl who works at Starbucks Coffee Shop. Griffith, Brent (1982) - saw his name at the Catalina 10K...first place. Hamilton, Christine (1987) - saw her name at the same Catalina 10K...first place. Imagine if they have kids...yikes!! Ladner, Rob (1987) - waiter at Vince's Spaghetti. Still in decent shape...wants to form a alumni Jim Stewart relay team...any takers? Lockyear, Mark (1988) - dropped the pilot idea...now a social science teacher at some random Christian middle school in Whitter. Maynard, Kristine (1991) -a masseuse..heard living with some random guy. McDaniels, Stacy (1990) - married (somebody from high school) and lives in Dana Hills. One and a half year old baby girl...she wants another kid soon. Miller, Jeff (1992) - moved back to Calif. from Arizona. Don't know what he's doing apart from drinking a lot. Nakamura, Sawako (1993) - runner at El Camino. 3rd in the State for X-C (18:19, Woodward Park) 1st in South Coast Conference (16:28, Dominguez Hills) Norton, Brent (1987) -working as a scientist in a lab...heard he's sick of his job. Vanderpluym, Andrea (1989) - one-way ticket to Europe with her boyfriend. Left in May, as has so far visited Turkey, Istanbul, Greece, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal. Plans to get a job in England and stay for an undetermine amount of time. Walkup, Grant (1988) - got married (to some random girl he met at UCSD) and lives in Pasadena. Lives with a dog and a bird. Still 'poking' rats at Cal Tech...hang up his jersey, he's done!
Well, that's it. Please, if you've moved give me your new address. I don't want to send these alumni letters to some random trailer home in East L.A. If you have any updated life styles, random thoughts, new addresses, or a burning desire to drink a beer, then call.
"The older I get, the faster I was."
Thanks,
Coach Tokuda
